A.J. Riehle’s Island & Cabin

Albert J. Riehle (A.J.) owned an Island on Lake of the Woods (GPS: 49.414147, -94.191863) near Sioux Narrows Ontario, completing the purchase in 1948. With the help of friends and family, A.J. was able to complete a rudimentary cabin there the same year and his sons, daughters, and families members approximately doubled the size of that original cabin in 1958. The island and cabin remain in use by many family members with a new, larger, and (we must acknowledge) more comfortable cottage build several decades later.

The island is very close to the heart of many of A.J.’s descendants spanning at least four generations. We now have a history of the early years for this wonderful spot, which was provided by his grandson, Paul Riehle* and for which we are most grateful. The history begins with some of A.J.’s activities in the 1930s and early 1940s and continues into the early 1950s.

Notes:
* Paul’s Riehle ancestry is Albert/Albert/Francis/Clemens/more.
– Note that Pauls father was also Albert and in fact he was A.J. Riehle Jr. Both were often referred to as Bert. This may cause some confusion when reviewing the photo labels but which Bert will usually be apparent based on their age.
– A.J. Senior died of a heart attack at the lake of the Woods on July 16, 1952.
